From being a closet dancer to being a proud one

If other people consider themselves as a closet rock star or a closet singer, I consider myself a closet dancer. I really enjoy every sway, every move, and every swing of my hips whenever I dance. But I enjoy all these only when I am in my room. I am a little overweight, that is why I get embarrassed whenever someone asks me to demonstrate my dancing prowess. I don’t want people to take notice of my love handles instead of my graceful movements.

Since I enjoy dancing, I also enjoy watching dance contests, particularly the hit TV show “Dancing with the Stars.” I would tend to copy the movements of the stars and most of the time; I notice how slim they get after the contest. I wanted to enhance my so-called talent that I enrolled in a dance school, but since I am employed at a full-time basis, I do not usually have the time to come to class and learn

It was then that I decided to fully take charge of my dancing talent and bought the dance instructional video by the famous dance instructor, Louis Van Amstel. Having the videos handy and at home has proven to be advantageous for me. Since I can now practice and learn during the time I am most available, I do not have to tire myself running from a meeting to a dance school. I can now dance anytime, at my leisure!

I want to learn all the dances, so I bought all eight CDs which taught all the steps from the basic to the most advanced ones. The videos included instructions for foxtrot, cha cha, waltz, tango, rhumba, jive salsa and samba. Not only that, I also got the bonus audio CD which contained lots of ballroom tunes which helped me during practice! After making myself familiar with the steps, I was able to turn my focus now on learning the tunes. Now, without the help of the videos, I can formulate my own steps based on the tune of the songs in the included audio CD.

Of all the types of dances included, I really enjoy doing the salsa and samba. Louis’ teaching style has been simple and easy to comprehend, that in spite of the complicated steps, I can follow the instructions easily. The rapid yet graceful movements of salsa and samba have made me feel more than a woman!

I felt like a queen while my husband and I are dancing. The sincere and happy communications our bodies make when we dance have become an important part of our relationship. There were even a few times when we found release in dancing when we are frustrated with one another! Ha!

After barely a month of swaying and swinging, I have turned from a closet dancer into a proud one. I can readily grab the chance to dance whenever there is one. I extremely enjoy feeling the eyes of others on me as I sway. It is also a plus that dancing has helped me lose some weight and made me gain some confidence. But most of all, I enjoy the spice that dancing has provided in my relationship with my husband!
